Making Safe Choices

PowerPoint Slide Show

Your facilitator says,  I found a great short story, “Little Jack (the Internet Fool.)”  I think we should read this story together to locate any mistakes that Jack made.  Then, if we work together with a partner we can choose a make mistake that Jack made.  Then, one of us can make a slide describing the mistake that Jack made. The other can make a slide of Jack doing the safe thing. Finally, we should put all the slides together to make an Internet Slide Show.

Choosing Great Sites

The Poster Campaign

Your facilitator says, "You can have a great time taking the knowledge that you have gained about "Choosing the Best Web Sites" and putting it to use with our suggested activity, "The Poster Campaign." Check out  The Science of Skateboarding to help us decide if this is a web page that we should use.  Just take ten (10) minutes to look over this web page. Take notes on the strengths and weaknesses of it.  Then, meet with several of your classmates to discuss, "should we use this web page?"  We can use our ideas that we come up with to create posters that will educate other students on how to choose great sites.

Recognize Advertiser's Tactics

Create your own Advertisement

I think that we should take a close look at the tactics that  advertisers are using to convince kids to come to their sites and buy stuff!" your facilitator says.  ""I know that I am often convinced by the flashy animations, catchy slogans, famous athletes, and cute mascots.  I think that we should take a look at several kids sites to see some advertising in action.  We can brainstorm a list of tactics that advertisers use to convince kids like us to come to their site.  There will be lot's of tactics but we can narrow it down to the top five (Big 5.)  It will be Fun!!!  We can create a Public Service Advertisement that teaches others how to use the Internet responsibly.  We can create a banner advertisement, an Avid-Cinema video advertisement, or a Hollywood High cartoon advertisement. Whatever!  We can get creative!

Making Your Own Responsible Use Policy for the Internet

Responsible Use Policy

Your facilitator says, "Can we all agree then that we will host a round-table discussion to hear everyone's wants, needs, thoughts, and worries?  Then, we can work together to hammer out our Responsible Use Policy for the Internet.  We'll all sign it to agree to follow it and then educate others in the school by sharing our ideas and maybe leading their discussion to bring the Responsible Use Policy for the Internet into their classroom.  Great let's do it!"
